DIRECTOR LYRICIST WRITER ACTOR
Nick trained at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama.
He directed ‘Our Brutus’ (Cochrane Theatre, London & Edinburgh: Fringe First and was nominated for the Independent Theatre Award 1993), ‘Whisky Galore’ (Edinburgh Fringe 2006) and 'Buddy - The Buddy Holly Story' for the original producers in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Holland, Denmark and the UK (2000 to 2002).
His writing includes ‘Grandma’s Shoes’ (Kings Head 1994), ‘Flight of the Swan’, a life of prima ballerina Anna Pavlova (Linbury Theatre, Royal Opera House 2001) and non-fiction social history ‘At the Heart of the City’ (1991).
His musical theatre collaborations include the book and lyrics for ‘9 Day Wonder’ (full cast recording featuring Peter Straker 1995) and book and lyrics for ‘W11' (full cast recording featuring Andy Bell, Debby Bishop, Linda Marlowe, Peter Straker and Cornell John 2017) with composer/producer Mike Allison, and the books for ‘Such Sweet Thunder’ (National Youth Music Theatre at Newcastle Theatre Royal 2004) and 'Tilting at Windmills’ (2007) with award winning composer and lyricist Tim Sutton.
Production and direction of solo performances includes David Beeler’s ‘Booth’ (New York Players Club/Edinburgh Fringe 1993) and Janine Mellor in Lee Hall’s ‘Spoonface Steinberg’ (Scottish tour 2003). Nick worked for Scottish Drama Training Network, and has worked with actors in training for many years. As a partner with the talent agency Hunwick Hughes (2000-17) he was the creative director at Kickabout Films (2010-12) developing new screen writing, and for them he wrote and directed ‘Village on the Roof’, a short film premiered in 2011.
Nick’s acting credits include the feature films ‘Sunshine on Leith’ (2013) and ‘The Angels’ Share’ (2012), TV series including ‘Outlander’ (2014), ‘MI High’ (2013), ‘Hope Springs’ (2009), ‘Rebus’ (2006) and ‘Taggart’ (2004). Nick has recorded many dramas and readings for BBC Radio 4 and Radio 3 as an actor and singer, and his theatre credits include ‘Buddy - the Buddy Holly Story’ (1992-1995) and the Narnia plays (1984/1986-87) in the West End and touring, and various productions of rock and pop musicals, Shakespeare, revivals and new writing at UK regional theatres.
